Z-Bar exterior shutters in solid Western Red Cedar with a classic Z-brace design, sold in pairs, available in eight heights from 36″ to 84″ and a range of finishes. Good Shutter's Z-Bar suits farmhouse, colonial, and craftsman home styles.
The Z-brace is the shutter equivalent of a signature: instantly recognizable, rooted in barn-door tradition, and just different enough from the standard board-and-batten to set a home apart. Our Z-Bar Exterior Shutters feature the classic diagonal brace running from the bottom inside corner to the top outside corner of each shutter panel, framed by horizontal top and bottom rails. Made from solid Cedar, pre-finished in a range of colors, and sold in matched pairs, they're the farmhouse exterior detail that works equally well on a rural property, a suburban craftsman, or a new-construction home aiming for character.

Why Real Cedar?
- Natural tannins resist rot, insects, and moisture without pressure treatment
- Lighter than hardwoods - easier to mount and handle during installation
- Holds exterior stain and paint reliably through freeze-thaw and rain cycles
- Resists warping and splitting through seasonal humidity changes
Common Questions
Does the Z-brace need to face a specific direction?
Traditionally the diagonal runs from the bottom inside corner to the top outside corner on each shutter, matching the historical barn-door convention, though it's primarily an aesthetic choice rather than a structural requirement.
How does Z-Bar differ from X-Bar shutters?
Z-Bar uses a single diagonal brace with horizontal top and bottom rails. X-Bar uses two diagonal braces crossing at the center with no horizontal rails, giving it a bolder, more symmetrical look.
