About Board & Batten Shutters

Board and batten is the oldest and most recognized shutter style in American architecture. Vertical planks joined by horizontal battens across the top and bottom (and sometimes middle) create a simple, honest profile that reads as authentic on farmhouses, colonial homes, cottages, and early craftsman houses. The design originated as a functional construction method for barn doors, gates, and rural shutters, and has held up as a decorative style for over 300 years.

Which Homes Suit Board & Batten Shutters

  • Colonial and Federal-era homes
  • Farmhouse and modern farmhouse builds
  • Cottages and small vernacular houses
  • Cape Cod and Nantucket-style homes
  • Any home with a traditional or rural aesthetic

Board and batten shutters are less suited to strictly modern, Victorian, or Mediterranean-style homes, where louvered or slat shutters typically work better.
